    Hello everyone,

I've recently been playing a little Minecraft after a long break, yet, not CTF. Regardless, I started thinking about CTF, because I can't help but recognize the squandered potential this game has. But as it stands now, CTF is a mess. Everyone knows that! The community has been asking for change for literally years, but nothing substantial is done about it. However, the authorities of the server are not the only ones to blame. Most of the "solutions" and "improvements" to the game's problems that are suggested on the forums are exactly the opposite of what they're meant to be. They're band-aids. A new class, for example, is fun at first, and everyone is happy. After that, though, the reality of the situation returns. The only accomplishment is a new class with it's own set of problems. The core issues of the game remain. It's no wonder the authorities here don't listen to the community, otherwise we would have 30 half-baked classes in this game! 13 is too many already.

However, in response to this; the timid server leadership does nothing. They're scared of angering the community. Remember the Paladin idea? What a display of poor leadership from the staff at the time. It seems nothing is different now. Who even authorizes server modifications? Chaploo? Does he even know what is going on?

So what's wrong with the game itself? I'll start with the classes. I stated above that they're "half-baked," or sub-par. And they are, but there's more than that. What seems to make a class more fun? I came up with three characteristics:

    1. High damage
    2. Low armor
    3. High survivability without armor

What do I mean by #3? Things like health potions, speed, Ninja's invisibility, Mage's healing spell, and Elf's wind element. All these things are alternate ways of increasing survivability without armor or steak.
Those three characteristics have been showing up more and more in newer classes and ideas. Pyro, Mage and Elf have all recently been made/remade, and display those characteristics.

The developers have realized that players like fast paced gameplay, and they weren't getting it before. Heavy, medic, soldier, necro, dwarf, you name it, unless it's Chemist, Assassin, Ninja and Archer all the older classes take forever to kill. Playing any one of those classes against any other was boring. Look at it now: Heavy is rarely played except for new players, Medic is strictly objective, same for Soldier, Necro and Dwarf are never played. With Soldier and Medic being boring classes, yet almost required to complete the objective, that makes completing the objective of the game boring. Heavy, Necro, and Dwarf are defense classes. All three are boring. Defense is boring, but yet a key component of the objective.

My conclusion here is this: the objective is boring! CTF is boring! Who wants to play a boring game?

But like I said, the developers realized this, but instead of fixing the current classes, they added new ones to fix the old problems. What fixes the new problems? It's an everlasting loop, and as I said earlier in this post, they're simply band-aids. They postpone the problem for a short time.

My solution: My solution would be to strip CTF down below the foundations. Make armor and damage in classes more balanced. I wouldn't add very many to begin with, I would make sure each class filled one, and only one role. I would also take advantage of the Combat Update to the fullest. Something everyone seems to be very afraid of, but it added the ability to make classes so much more diverse from each other. I would also have maps be smaller. That would direct the gameplay to a more centralized area, thus increasing the pace of the game, which I determined is generally more fun. After all that, just tweaks to finalize the whole experience of "CTF: 2.0."

To conclude, I have to to say that I do not intend to blend Moderators as what I described as "Authorities." I don't know many of the Moderators of today, but I'm sure they care for the state of the game as I do, and would be willing to take some risks for it, unlike the actual decision-makers of CTF which are as I described.

I hope all of you who have read this will take this extreme idea into consideration, and realize that this desperate state of the game requires drastic change.

At that; I hope you had a Merry Christmas!

The moderators are part of the "Big Brawl" political establishment that is trying to brainwash us into accepting endless nerfs, zero community representation, and Orwellian thought control. Are we going to stand for this??? No I say no!

Heavy rarely used other than by new players? Have you played current ctf?*sarcasm*
    Anyway,
I kinda agree with smaller maps but those come with their own set of problems. Larger maps have more diverse and spread out action and gameplay but it takes longer to do much of anything, while smaller maps have quicker and more fast-paced gameplay but you cant take 3 steps without being headshot or attacked by 10 people. A balance of small and large maps is better than just having all the maps small.

Brawl really does need to update to 1.9, 1.10, 1.11 ect, and CTF is no different. I get people don't like the combat update and blah blah blah but we're losing out on a potentially large wave of newer players because they most likely updated. The cooldowns can be disabled so don't cry about "the cooldown ruins pvp" 1.9 also allows quick and easy customization with both pvp dynamics, environmental effects, and custom texturing. New blocks added in 1.9-1.10 will also let ctf maps feel more unique and not the same stone castle by a river.

    But...

As of the rest of this post, count your blessings! Some might say CTF isn't really a blessing, but I think otherwise. Hey, at least CTF is still here...

While I respect you char, I always seem to disagree with you on a fundamental level. This post was no exception, and it's just the most interesting thing to me. I wish you could hold up better in debates cause I really wanna pick that brain.

It's definitely an interesting take on the situation. You do bring up some good points, and although it isn't anywhere near the whole story, it's got a lot of content for 752 words

So you're saying that no one likes to play as a buffed heavy? On the other hand, I really think CTF should take advantage of 1.9 combat. Maybe some classes have cool downs while others don't?

I actually like Heavy as a class, and I appreciate the fact they it's remained the same class it was 5 or 6 years ago. Heavy was my main class for a while, actually. Regardless, I stand with the point I made that it is boring to play against any class with ridiculously high armor/health. CTF needs to balance health and damage.

    Exactly what I was thinking.

I copy and pasted this into a Word document and it counted the words for me.

Likewise. Maybe I'm not one for debates, but if you have any criticism with my statement feel free to make it known. Maybe even post a counter topic?

I was kind of thinking about what you said. like maybe the flag carrier could have that new glow effect, so new players and midfielders would at least have some reason to go and check it out. Not to mention this would help both support and recovery find the other player faster.

And with the cooldowns, possibly we could still have cooldowns for certain classes, such as if dwarf gets no change, you could just keep that annoyingly long cooldown, and heavy where otherwise its just annoying to fight. But classes like ninja would have significantly less or no cooldown, as it both fits with the class and the survivability of one.

Assassin would need to be changed, as shields in 1.9 pvp don't necessarily work the same way as blocking does atm, and even if you block with a shield you'll die to the assassin, but there is plenty of rework ideas to choose from for assassin.
Mage would also need to be fixed (regrettably) as its DPS would suddenly be significantly higher comparably to classes that get the cooldown and would tear them to shreds.

If we could find out a way to make sure you weren't immediately banned when using a elytra for flyhacking, a class could possibly be made around that, but that would have to come after everything is fixed.

"1.9", you will lose people, no one plays on 1.9 thats bs. All big servers are able to use 1.7-1.8. 1.9-1.11 would be the death of all of CTF. *sarcasm but it still sucks.

    Sure.
Here is where I would do the exact opposite. I would make it so that every class could play every role, and here is why.
I believe none of these things make classes anymore fun. High Damage is essentially irrelevant if your rebuilding ctf from the ground up. Same with low armor. High Survivability is also problematic, but I'll avoid going to far into detail about that.

What I believe is actually fun is for players is to have options. When a player is able to recognize a situation and have the tools to interact with it and utilize them to solve a problem is essentially what is fun for them. Recognizing the same situation over and over and applying the same tools causes stagnation. So to make a truly fun game. There must be a large amount of depth to explore, and one sure way to make sure every class has depth is too make sure they can preform in all roles in ctf.

It's compatible yes but not actually in 1.9. You cannot use the new pvp dynamics or the new items/blocks used. This goes with all of Brawl, not just CTF. Brawl is also compatible with 1.10 and maybe 1.11/1.11.2

Brawl hasn't been updated to even just 1.9 yet because both the staff and the community are all changeophobics.

There's a difference between having options and having an answer to every single situation no matter what position you're in. What I think @Cher_ is getting at is that there are a bunch of classes that can succeed in situations that they really shouldn't succeed in. While I think that most classes should be able to serve a purpose in each of the general offense/defense/recovery states of the game, they should all go about it in a different way. For example, say you need to recover a flag from a Medic/Heavy duo camping Spawn on Blackout. Using an Archer and an Assassin, you have the Archer start shooting arrows from the middle roof to knock the Medic away from the Heavy and to threaten both of them with the possibility of an Instant Kill. While they're busy trying to dodge the arrows, the Assassin drops down from above spawn and instant kills the Heavy, recovering the flag and saving America. Of course in a real game it's not as simple as that, but it illustrates my point.

While both these characters served a purpose in recovery, they went about it in different methods. This is how any team-based game should work. Every player has a different job to do in order to complete a shared objective.

The funny thing about this post is that I actually logged on to Brawl for the first time in months because I wanted to discuss my thoughts about this game. I actually have a lot of the same ideas as OP, and I guess it's just a viewpoint we share as people who play CTF on/off rather than our primary game.
