Server Size Reduction?

    Back at it again with another terrible idea but one I think is good? Basically I went on to my favorite Minecraft Online Multiplayer PvP Capture the Flag Minigame Server, and realized that it had two servers with players on it! One server was dead full, and on the first map, probably not about to end anytime soon and the other had 1 player on it. Which means I braindead buy a rank and join a full server, or sit in the other server and wait for people to show up.

    Which is why I propose moving the servers down to a 40 player maximum. This would allow more servers to be played, and on the rare occasion that brawl had over 80 people playing CTF at a time, then the third server would be used, rather than needing 106 to play on three servers.

    Also please do this because I hate going into a game and the other team had 10 archers and 8 heavies on defense and the only way to get anything done is by ghost capping.

    *NOTE* : Believe it or not I am not knowledgeable about _Minecraft Sever Upkeep_ so please don't reply to this thread being like "Oh that would never work because it would cost more money", and also I dunno if the servers had to be bumped up to 50 earlier on, just seems like a decent idea to me xd.

    Match server makes 160, plus the super secret server makes 200, never will there be more than 200 people wanting to play minecraft capture the flag at the exact same time lmao.

    Not what I'm saying. What if there's more than 120 people online, on either ctf 1, ctf 2, or ctf 3? It's gotten close to/surpassed that before on Free Friday.

    Yes and I'm saying in the unlikely scenario that there is over 120 players, that the server that is never used can finally be opened, on Friday only.

    Plus you're trying to prove a good point, which it is a good point, but the servers would be better like this on 6/7 days where it has a usual 60 or 70 players.

    Ohh that's what you're saying. Sorry that wasn't clear to me when I read your post the first time around.

    I'm not sure what I think about that. It might raise potential scheduling issues with practices or official/unofficial matches since whether or not one of the match servers would be opened wouldn't be a sure thing. But I haven't been very active in teams for a long time so I don't know how many teams actually schedule events on Fridays.

    I agree, they would. I completely get that frustration of having only one server with more than 5 people on it while there's 50+ online, since that's what happens almost every single day. It's especially annoying when (as you said) the one popular server is full and you can't join it, leaving you stuck on the empty server hoping for 6 people to join it and stay there for 1 minute so that a game can start.

    My reservations aside I think slightly lowering the server size from 50 to 40 per game would be a great way to keep this from happening.

    Just realized I'd suggested the same thing almost a year ago.

    The "super secret server" is used as a second match server. It's used when the match server is occupied and another event/practice/match is scheduled. As Admiral said, opening it or using the official match server on Fridays has the possibility to interfere with matches, practices, or events.

    So you are saying they should change the size because you can't join full servers? That is exactly why people buy ranks, if you change this noone will buy a rank!

    Not really, because it's easier for a server to be full if its maximum player amount is 40. Currently, it's either you play a full and unenjoyable game (crowded flagrooms), or play a very small, less exciting game. Lowering it to 40 would fix the problem, since the maps would be less crowded, and servers would be more evened up.

    You're not really seeing Daniellll's point here. The fact that players would be annoyed playing an empty game would be an incentive for them to buy a rank to join a full game. If we were to lower the maximum server size, we would start cutting into Brawl's profits.

    Yeah I know what you're saying and all, but it's not like people are not going to want to join full servers. It's just that instead of a 50 and a 10 man server it can be 40 and 20, making it more enjoyable. People will still want to play full servers because their friends are on. Heck, brawls player count could be raised to 80 at a given time and people would buy ranks more often :smile:.

    Similarly to what I said, it's a lot easier to reach the player limit, so ranks could be used for joining full servers more easily. The current maximum server size is not reached every time of the day, and lowering the maximum server size would potentially increase the time that there is at least one full CTF server. It doesn't ruin the incentive of people buying ranks to join a full game imo.

    Even if it might decrease the need to buy ranks to join a full game, I don't think that lowering the maximum server size would cut into Brawl's profits. Joining full servers are not the only perks a CTF rank provides. They can still switch teams, and access certain classes, which are, in my opinion, the perks that are more recognized and useful.

    In the rare case that this happens, and all servers are full, the player slots can just go up. Limit it to 40 per server: if each server becomes full, increase it to 50 per server.

    I'm not really sure how much money brawl is going to save doing this, so I can't really see the point in me having an opinion on it. If reducing the slots (until we need them) saves a significant amount of money, then of course it's worth doing, but that all depends on the server pricing structure. I don't have any idea what that pricing structure is, so I can't really comment.

    Besides that, I do sort of agree with this here, but as everyone stated above we'd end up losing profit, which would farther decrease the possibility of adding more servers in the future. Though, if we can somehow manage to keep people intrigued into the perks of ranks, and have it so that there is something like 2 full games with less people, and 1 server left over that is completely empty. I would love this since I think maybe most of us can agree that the map rotation isn't the best at the moment, and some may just want to play a different map then the one that was played like 3 times in a row.
