    Hello there,

    This week, we've decided to test a change to flag mechanics in Capture the Flag. The testing will begin on Monday, September 2nd and last until Monday, September 9th.

    Change:
    -Flag Pickup Delay: Changed from 500ms -> 0ms (instant pickup)
    -Pickup time for Ninja remains unchanged

    The significance this change will bring is largely undetermined, so please be sure to leave feedback by responding to the in-game poll that will appear around the middle of the week. You can also leave detailed responses on this thread.


    The testing for this change ended a few hours ago. Now, we would like to gain feedback about this change from you guys on whether you liked it or not. Instead of announcing a poll, we thought it'd be useful to gather written feedback from the community as this change seemed significant for offensive players stealing the flag. Specifically, we would like to ask you two questions:

    - Was this Flag Pickup change a step in the right direction?
    - What changes would we have to make to other areas of the game to make this work?


    We need the reasoning behind your opinions, otherwise the feedback won't be taken into consideration.

    How long is the flag pickup delay for ninja now?

    That will not change for ninja, so it will still be 1.5s to pick up the flag as ninja.

    feel like it shouldnt be instant still. chems can really cap easily now

    I feel like this is to help the competitive side of CTF, where sometimes it’s hard to cap depending on the teams.

    hopefully it makes it so u only have to kill the same ninja 4 times before stealing flag instead of 5

    It wasn't literally no one, but okay. Also, a dev doesn't decide a change like this, as it actually gets discussed by the other staff members to see if we should test it or not. Also, it is just a test for a week, not a permanent change.

    And I thought playing pyro was stressful before.

    I might sound like @Admiral_Munson when I say this but, every time I see a gameplay fix to something that isn’t broken I just think “necro literally doesn’t work, and we’re doing this?” I’m not mad I’m just a little confused as to why

    This is just a value change and was suggested as an improvement to offence, which the community wants us to improve, so we're testing it. Necro requires a lot more time and we are still working on this. Also, the change isn't permanent, so if the community likes it, it would most likely be implemented into the game. We understand that this will not fix the issue of offence, but we believe it may be a step in the right direction, depending on how this test goes.

    I think this is a good thing. It encourages noobs like me to try offense, and turns out its fun :smile: i dont think its too overpowered for advanced players either, they get in and out of the flagroom in seconds anyway

    This made offence a bit too easy, pyro wasn't really viable as once you have the flag you would be out of pyros reach. This was a big buff for assassins as you weren't forced to block next to the flag, i think it actually made it harder for newer players cause they kept getting assassinated, if there is a slight timer to pick up the flag it would make newer players block more commonly when stealing. For offence it became too easy to walk in and walk out without taking much damage especially using chemist. Soldiers hardest part to capping is stealing the flag and escaping the flag room, but once that was taken away it became easier but not op. Elf became too op with the instant pickup as you can easily escape without being hit at all due to the wind element. Heavy and medic it helped as they are harder classes to cap with.

    I think it would be good to reduce the time slightly but not make it instant.

    The main reason I dislike this is with elf. If an elf water elements the flag, they can continuously fly and be out with no damage. Not to mention if there’s more than one person on offense ( a chemist per say). Tbh on some maps it feels like pyro is just there for show with this change.

    If they decide to keep this change I feel like pyro would need to be reverted back to insta kill. Pyro would be lame if they didnt lol.

    This makes defending nigh impossible against elves and chemists, both of whom can touch the flag before a pyro has time to react, and turns the game into recovery. -1

    I personally don't think it made offense too easy. We've seen the test on multiple PPMs, and if it would have been too easy, we would have seen 3 caps (and 5 caps on blackout) by the offense pretty fast, but that didn't happen. That was not too easy because defensive players were roaming.

    As an offensive player, I really liked the test and I think it made it more enjoyable to play on offense. Recently, I felt like the game was slow and nothing was really happening on offense because it was hard to steal the flag and to cap, but with that change, I felt like the game was a little faster (without being too easy) and more was happening because people were stealing the flag more often than usual.

    As a defense main, in casual the instant pickup is great! It litterally means that nons that run into the flag room pick up the flag faster & thus I get more credits.
    And as I do understand offense mains love this feature since they can barely touch the flag & then worry about getting out, I feel like the “barely touch the flag” bit is little op. I would hate to see Bath cap with soldier just bc he could actually get out of the flag room with a shorter flag grab. Thus I don’t think this feature should be added since it will make it too ez for bath with soldier, meaning that any other offense would be way to good & defense would have a much harder time.

    Admittedly the instant flag pick up was a bit annoying. Not going to reiterate any of the defence talk that has gone on because I agree with it. My main frustration is that you couldn’t enter the flagroom and cross it without picking up the flag. As happened a few times whilst playing medic offense, I’d run into a flagroom and try to knock the pyro away to let my main capper take the flag. Instead I’d pick up the flag, without the intent to, and you had no ability to quickly close down the space without picking up, or being able to choose to not pick up by not pausing next to the flag.
    Overall I think it was an interesting idea and seemed kinda fun for a bit but after a while became frustrating to play against in casual and lost it’s fun rather quickly.
